Qualifying for a tax deduction:
When making a contribution to a qualified organization (such as 501(c)(3) organizations in the form of charitable, religious, or educational organizations) in the form of a donated vehicle, you may qualify for a tax deduction. This can be done through both a qualified charity, or a car donation center.
In order to qualify for a tax deduction the contribution to charity must be noted in the form of an itemized deduction on your Schedule A of Form 1040. Be sure to observe the regulations regarding limitations on charitable deductions. See ‘Charitable Contributions‘ Publication 526 by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) for more details.
The amount that can be deducted is determined by the what the charity does with your vehicle. Typically a charity will sell the contribution in the form of a wholesale auction. The deductible amount is then limited to the amount of that sale value that actually goes to the charity.
In general, when donating a vehicle, it will qualify as one of two categories:
Contribution Deduction of More than $500:
Complete Section A of Form 8283 and ensure this is attached to your return.
Contribution Deduction of more than $ 5,000:
In this case verification will be required in the form of a qualified appraisal. Be sure to use an independent appraisal service. In addition to this, you will have to complete Schedule B of Form 8283. Ensure this is done for each item claim more than $5,000 in value.
No matter what the value of the claim is, be sure to obtain a tax receipt containing the name of the charity, the date of donation, make and year of the donated vehicle, name of the donor, as well as the Federal Tax ID number. Also take note that there is a time frame in which the receipt must be sent. Your tax receipt must be sent within 30 days of the time of sale of the donated auto. Sales mostly take place within the first week or two after the time of vehicle donation. So, if there is no indication of written acknowledgment being sent after the aforementioned time period, be suspicious.
Before actually donating a car to a qualified charity, always be sure to keep proper documentation in the form of copies transfer of ownership, the received tax receipt, even photographs may prove useful in the future.
